15 May International Day of the Family

17/05/2024

International Family Day is celebrated every year around the world on 15 May.

It aims to promote the importance of the institution of the family and to raise awareness of issues relating to the promotion of family well-being and mutual support and love between family members.

At the same time, it promotes concepts that are very important for the well-being of families, such as health, education, gender equality, children's rights and social inclusion, among others.

Indicative ways of ensuring and promoting good mental health and well-being for all within the family

We focus on one tip at a time until we create new routines to help us and our family maintain a healthy, more fulfilling lifestyle.

1. Eat together

Getting into the regular habit of preparing or eating meals as a family is a great way to improve family wellness and bonding with each other. We make a significant effort to prioritize at least one meal a day where we all eat together as a family.

Establishing a routine around our meals can also help our children create their own healthy eating habits as they grow up.

2. Simplify our family schedule

Everyone these days is very busy all the time, including children. It seems that the majority of families have come to accept the hectic pace and chaos that often prevails. However, we do have a choice in how busy we are.

We have control over how much stuff fills our schedule and encroaches on family time.

So if we find ourselves busy every day and engrossed in activities that undermine our family well-being, it may be time to review our personal and family schedules.

3. Devote an evening to family fun

Designate one night a week as "family night" and plan to do an activity together. One idea is to play a board game as a family. Board games can teach children skills and help them learn to deal with losing (and winning) appropriately, while relieving stress and building creative thinking.

4. Organizing our home to reduce stress

Disorganized, cluttered spaces can cause a feeling of stress, overwhelm and lack of concentration. All of these can affect the overall atmosphere in the home and undermine our family's well-being. Organizing the space within our home can create more mental space to focus on what is important to the family.

5. Volunteer for a cause together

Helping other individuals, families or animals - or working for a special cause - is a great way to share family time. We can look for opportunities to help in our local community and volunteer. When we as a family focus on a cause, we promote the emotional and spiritual well-being of our family. Volunteering as a family can also instill values in our children that enhance their mental health, such as kindness, gratitude and selflessness.

6. Going out together

After a long day at work or school, the first thing we might want when we get home is to relax on the couch and watch TV or deal with our phones. We can feel so relieved to have some free time on the weekends that going out is the furthest thing from our minds. But being outside with our family helps. Whether it's a regular evening stroll around the neighborhood, a bike ride or a walk in a park, getting outdoors together is a great way to get away from the daily grind, have fun, manage daily stress and reconnect as a family.

7. Develop healthy sleep habits for all family members

Adequate sleep is critical and necessary for the well-being of the entire family. So as we strive to improve family wellness and create healthy routines, we must not overlook sleep. Getting enough sleep is important to have enough energy and to be able to concentrate the next day. Bedtime can also be a great time to connect with our children emotionally.
